# Honey, I Shrunk the Data!

You generally don’t want to shrink your kids (unless you’re making a hit comedy movie), but you definitely will want to shrink your data—especially if you’re ingesting it at record speeds.

Timescale makes this easy, by allowing you to enable compression on a hypertable with two simple commands. We use industry-leading columnar compression with an often staggering 95% compression rate. That means 1GB of data can be stored in only 50MB on disk. An amazing side-effect of compressing data is that query performance can significantly increase, as less time is spent reading from disk.
